Program Benefits

Work Place Morale

Organizations often see and feel an elevated level of energy as a result of implementing a wellness program. The ultimate goal of any organization committed to the success of their wellness program is the improvement of the attitudes and actions of its employees. Wellness Programs cover a broad range of healthcare initiatives. From nutritional advice to exercise plans, these programs look after diverse employee needs. The effectiveness of a Wellness Program in terms of the office environment is simple. Employees are healthy therefore on the whole a lot happier; this equates to maximized performance. They are also aware that the company is taking measures to ensure their health and wellbeing which breeds loyalty and responsibility.

Reduced Absenteeism

A recent American Sports Data study found the following averages:

  • Frequent exercisers were absent from work only 2.11 days per year compared to inactive employees who were absent 3.06 days per year.
  • The physically active employees reported to work nearly 70% more than inactive employees.
  • Researchers believe that exercise helps boost the immune system and increases strength, thus resulting in fewer incidences of absenteeism due to sickness or injury.
  • The leading cause of increased loss of productivity to sick time is stress.

In December 2004, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences published a report that found:

  • Stress affects the telomeres in the chromosomes of immune cells of women between the ages of 20 and 50.
  • Women under stress, had undergone the equivalent of 10 years additional aging compared to women living healthy lives.
  • DuPont Corp. found that absences from illness unrelated to the job decreases 14% at 41 industrial sites where its health promotion program was offered, compared with a 5.8% decline where it wasn't.

Decreased Healthcare Costs

The most obvious benefit of a corporate wellness program is that it allows companies to reduce their overall healthcare costs, in part by reducing the number of medical claims processed each year.
Both the business community and the general population need exercise. Study after study has confirmed that regular exercise has a preventive effect against a wide variety of illness and disease.

  • The U.S. Surgeon General reports that 75% of all illness can be attributed to lifestyle-related causes, and that 60% of Americas population is inactive.
  • The more your business helps associates avoid illness and disease, the more you can save on healthcare costs each year.

Over $1 trillion dollars are spent annually in the U.S. alone on health care costs. This greatly exceeds the expenditures of any other country. The average Americans health care cost is over $3,000 per year and totals approximately $225,000 in a lifetime. Most of these costs are directly associated with lifestyle habits. Organizations willing to take action towards reducing these cost will be greatly rewarded in countless ways including reduction of health care costs, increased productivity and reduced turnover rates. In April 2007 Thompson Healthcare researchers concluded that moderately obese American workers (Body-Mass-Index 30.0-34.9) incurred total annual health care costs of 21 percent above those with normal weight, and American workers suffering from severe obesity (BMI 35+) incurred annual health care costs of 75 percent higher than those with normal weight.
Since 2000, employment based insurance premiums are up 87 percent, while per person medical costs have increased 69 percent from 1993-2003.

Increased Productivity

Although not as easy to measure as a reduction in healthcare costs, improved employee productivity can have a considerable impact on an organization and its profitability. Corporate wellness programs tend to improve overall morale, as participating associates feel better about themselves and their company. Such programs lead to a more energetic, positive and productive workplace, thus strengthening a company and helping to position it for success.

Lower Turnover

Healthy associates are happy associates; and happy workers almost always turn out to be faithful, long-term employees. So the healthier and happier the work force, the less a company has to spend on hiring and training new employees.
Replacement costs can be 150% of an employees annual compensation figure. The cost will be significantly higher (200% to 250% of annual compensation) for managerial and sales positions.
To put this into perspective, let's assume the average salary of employees in a given company is $50,000 per year. Taking the cost of turnover at 150% of salary, the cost of turnover is then $75,000 per employee who leaves the company. For the mid-sized company of 1,000 employees who has a 10% annual rate of turnover, the annual cost of turnover is $7.5 million!

Increased Recruitment Potential

Employee talent is crucial to the success of any organization. Companies compete for the best talent available and look for ways to lure potential employees to their organization. A successful wellness program can easily be marketed as an added benefit to entice talented contributors!
